Whenever a major honors show nears, there’s always a demand to include additional classifications to honor unsung work and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.
A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything during that awards season
- A different innovative game missed out that year
- A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
- Just some brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
