In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Political Discussions Taking Place
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
