India's capital Wakes Up to Dangerous Pollution Following Festival of Lights

Various sections of the capital registered an pollution measurement above 500, which translates to 10x the recommended threshold set by the global health authority.

Firecracker Ban and New Developments
Beginning in 2020, the government had implemented a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their major role to the dangerous pollution that engulfs the metropolis as colder weather begins.

Near celebratory seasons, the levels of hazardous airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been observed to shoot up to 70% higher the peak levels ever measured in the Chinese city, which was previously regarded as the planet's dirtiest city.
Multiple Pollution Contributors
The situation in Delhi is resulting from a convergence of various sources including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, building projects, waste incineration and haze from agricultural fires in nearby regions of farming communities.
Within these states, rural residents regularly burn crop residue to prepare for next season, generating hazardous smog that then gets trapped over the capital as colder air arrives.
