Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in several conversations following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, following the opener made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, he revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require four wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

A loss will extend England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the side, Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There is no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
