Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
